Pilgrim Primary Academy Governors

Welcome to the Pilgrim Primary Academy Governor page. For Reach South governors, please click here.

Our Governing Body comprises of 10 Governors, all of whom bring different skills to our School. As an academy and part of Reach South Academy Trust our local governing board consists of four trust appointed Governors, two staff Governors, the Headteacher, two parent Governors and a co-opted Governor.

Governors are volunteers who give their time and commitment to what we hope, is a very rewarding role and experience.  Governors are also subject to an OFSTED inspection at the same time and in the same way as the school would be inspected.

My name is Geoff Vaughan and I have recently been appointed as a Co-opted Governor at Pilgrim Primary School.

I was a teacher for 39 years and retired in August 2014. I have been a Headteacher for 29 of those years encompassing 3 Headships and a role as an Adviser for Cornwall Education Authority.

Although I am now retired, I still maintain a very keen interest in education and I am looking forward to supporting Pilgrim Primary School in its continued development and success.

This is an exciting and very challenging time in education and being a governor involves a lot of responsibility. I will do my very best for everyone concerned and look forward to meeting you.

I have been a qualified Primary School Teacher since 1997 and I have been working in both primary and secondary schools as a teacher within Plymouth and surrounding areas since 2005, before this I was teaching in Gloucester. I became the SENCO at Pilgrim Primary Academy in September 2019. I have a strong commitment to raising educational attainment for children and young people with SEN, including working with pupils directly and supporting other staff to do so.

I have been a primary school governor since 2005 and became a governor at Pilgrim Primary School in 2009.

As a secondary school Computing and Science teacher for more than twenty five years, mostly in Plymouth, I know how crucial it is that children get the best possible start in primary education, which is why I volunteer as a governor.

I am really proud of the achievements of Pilgrim Primary Academy as well as the excellent opportunities and care that this school provides.

Mrs Victoria Whitehouse

Parent Governor - Elected by parents

Attendance 2020-21: 4/5

I am 34 years old, I have a 7 year old son who attends Pilgrim and I am also mum to a 3 year old, who will attend Pilgrim in 2020. I work at the Co-op Warehouse in Plympton where I head up the Finance department and have been working there for the last 12 years.

I put myself forward to join the schools team of governors to gain insight into the inner workings and to have an input into the future of the school. I believe Pilgrim is a great school where children can thrive and being a part of that is an honour.

I am now retired and married with 3 children, one of whom teaches at a local Secondary School. We also have 4 grandchildren, 3 of whom are at Primary School.

I have a keen interest in helping to ensure that young people have the best start in life.

Trust Governor - Appointed by the Trust

Term: 12.05.21- 11.05.25.
Responsibility: Early Years
Attendance 2020-21: 5/5

My name is Julie Morris and I have just been appointed as a Governor at Pilgrim Primary. I have recently taken early retirement from being an educator in the Life Education Centre, facilitating drug prevention education across the city, Harold the giraffe and I worked together for 17 years. Prior to this I was a teacher in both Fareham and Plymouth.

I was born in Plymouth and have spent most of my life in this wonderful city. I am married, with 2 sons and have recently become a grandma which is such a joy. I continue to volunteer as the Children’s work coordinator at Plymouth Central Hall which is the church I have been part of for over 30 years.

As a governor I bring my skills and enthusiasm for education which I believe can play such a significant role in the direction a child’s life takes. Pilgrim Primary School offers the children so many opportunities right across the curriculum and as part of the Standards, Teaching and Learning and Curriculum committee I hope I will be able to contribute to this.

I am a teacher, who has been working at Pilgrim Primary for over a year. I am currently in Year 5 but have worked in various year groups throughout my career.

I came into teaching quite late, as my children were growing up, and I feel very lucky to have found such a great school to work in.

Now my daughters are at University, I really wanted to gain as much experience as possible and give my commitment to the school. I have life experience to offer the role along with a parent and teacher perspective.

Mrs Sarah Blakebrough

Parent Governor - Elected by parents

Term : 21.05.19 - 20.05.23
Responsibility: Mental Health & Wellbeing
Attendance 2020-21: 1/5

I have worked in IT at the University of Plymouth for 12 years, and am an advocate for STEM, especially encouraging children to enjoy the subjects from a young age. I am also passionate about Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and was elected as joint Equalities Coordinator for my local Unison branch.

As an ex-pupil of Pilgrim, it has been a joy to watch the school thrive over the years, and I am proud to be able to work with the governors to encourage further growth.
