Maths Provision

At Pilgrim Primary we teach our children a high-quality progressive mathematics education which provides them with a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the power of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. In our school we want to help children to understand and appreciate that the skills learned in maths can be used and applied to their everyday life. We encourage our children to become curious and critical learners in mathematics so they are able to explore the subject through science, technology and engineering, finance and beyond.

The National Curriculum for primary mathematics has three aims that should be at the heart of how we interpret the content of the curriculum:

~ Conceptual understanding - Developing children's factual, conceptual and procedural knowledge allowing them to deepen their understanding and apply their knowledge to problem solve.

~ Mathematical reasoning - To enable children to develop their mathematical talk, draw upon their mental strategies and be able to present their findings effectively.

~ Problem solving - Mathematics is an integral part of life and this is why we endeavor to provide our children with all the elements and confidence they need to tackle a range of mathematical problems.
